Makar Sankranti Special Recipes

Recipes are special way to celebrate festival. In this article we give some of the recipes to make your Sankranti more gala and memorable.

Sweet Rice or Pongal:

Ingredients needed are:

One cup Rice
Half or one third cup Green Gram Dal
Powdered Jaggery about one cup
Five to six cups Water
One tablespoon Cashewnuts
One fourth cup Ghee
One tablespoon Raisins
One fourth teaspoon Cardamom powder


Roast green gram dal in a pan till it is brown. Take the rice and wash the rice. Wash the roasted dal as well and put rice and dal in pressure cooker with five cups of water. Put the flame high for 10 minutes. Take another pan and melt jaggery in half cuo of water. Open the pressure sooker and add the jaggery juice in the mixture. Mix it throughly. Roast the cashewnuts and raisins in ghee in another pan and add the mixture to the sweet rice. Add cardamom powder to get sweet smell. Sweet pongla is ready to serve.

Pesarattu or Special Dosa

Ingredients needed are:

One cup Moong Dal
One finely chopped Onion
One fourth teaspoon finely chopped Ginger
Little amount of finely chopped coriander leaves
Two or three Green Chillies
Salt as per taste


The procedure is almost same as the dosa but here the dal is moong dal where as for dosa it was udat dal and rice. Soak moong dal for four hours in water. Wash it and add chillies and ginger. Grind it in a blender to make a smooth paste. Add chopped coriander leaves, chopped onions and salt to the paste. Take flat griddled pan used for dosas. Heat it and pour the batter on it. Spread the batter evenly on the pan by moving from center to the corners. Shape it as a round pancake and sprinkle little oil on it. Turn over and cook. Pesarattu is ready to serve. Serve it with coconut chutney.
